Nosey Neighbors: Facebook Privacy

Lots of people want the benefits of more FarmVille neighbors, but don’t have lots of friends playing FarmVille. Here’s one way to up your numbers while protecting (most of) your privacy

Facebook has a fabulous feature called Lists which essentially allows you to group your friends together and then restrict their access by group. So, you can create a group called FarmVille, add new people you’re playing with to it, and lock down what, exactly, they’re allowed to see about you.

ONE: Create List

  1. Log into Facebook and click Friends in the top navigation.
  2. On the left, click the Make a New List button (if you have any existing lists, hit +create at the bottom of your lists.)
  3. Name your list FarmVille in the pop-up box.
  4. Click each of your existing FarmVille neighbours in the pop-up box and add them to your new list.

Now that you have a list and some current friends to test it with, we want to lock down

TWO: Increase Privacy

  1. On the top bar, click Settings > Privacy Settings
  2. For every time on the list, click the link that says Edit Custom Settings
  3. In the box that says Except these people, start typing in FarmVille:

Privacy Settings on Facebook

Do this for every privacy option on this page and press SAVE. Do it again for the Contact tab. When complete, you will have severely restricted the information people on your FarmVille list can see.

To test it, type in the name of someone on your FarmVille list into the box labelled “See how a friend sees your profile” at the top of the Privacy page you were just editing.

THREE: Add Virtual Strangers

If you are happy with your privacy settings, you can go to the Finding Neighbors forum at Zynga and post a request or send a request to people actively looking for friends.

When you accept Friend requests from these new people, you MUST use the drop down before approving them to add them to your FarmVille list:

Friend request drop-down

And that’s it – more friends with more privacy!
